In the Wigan and District Junior Cricket League match held at The Gin Pit Oval on 17th July 2024, Rainhill CC Under 15 emerged victorious against Astley & Tyldesley CC Under 15 by 8 runs.
Astley & Tyldesley won the toss and chose to field first. Rainhill CC set a competitive target, scoring 130 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a solid opening partnership between Nathan Lawler and Freddie Foulkes, who put on 95 runs together. Nathan Lawler led from the front, retiring not out with a superb 50 runs off 43 balls, which included 8 fours and 1 six. Freddie Foulkes also made a significant contribution with 39 runs off 42 balls before being caught. Jack Tyms provided a quickfire 11 runs off 8 balls, adding to the team’s momentum.
Astley & Tyldesley’s reply fell short as they managed to score 122 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Rocco Walker top-scored with 51 runs off 52 balls, hitting 8 fours and 1 six, and retired not out. Oliver Robinson remained unbeaten with 18 runs off 13 balls, including 1 four and 1 six. Louis Norman contributed 21 runs off 33 balls before being caught by Harry Ball off Nathan Lawler.
Rainhill’s bowling was led by Owen Morrissey, who took 2 wickets for just 11 runs in his 3 overs. Finnlee Millar bowled economically, conceding just 1.5 runs per over in his 4-over spell. Tejas Sirikonda also bowled economically, taking 1 wicket for 23 runs in his 4 overs, and Nathan Lawler claimed a wicket, giving away 22 runs in his 3 overs.
The match became tense as Astley & Tyldesley chased well, putting Rainhill under pressure. Rainhill’s fielding was exceptional in these crucial moments, with Mackenzie Henderson taking a great catch and executing a crucial run-out. Harry Ball also took a good catch to dismiss Louis Norman, helping to contain the chase and secure the win.
Rainhill CC’s all-round performance secured them a narrow victory, earning them 3 valuable points in the league.
The disciplined batting by Nathan Lawler and Freddie Foulkes, along with effective bowling and exceptional fielding under pressure, ensured their win against Astley & Tyldesley.
