Rainhill 120/2 (net score 310)
Maghull 107/9 (net score 262)
Rainhill CC Women’s Softball – affectionately known as The Rockettes – got their 2025 season off to the perfect start with a comprehensive 48-run win against Maghull CC in their opening Division 1 fixture.
After gaining promotion last year, expectations were high – and the team delivered. Skipper Sarah Curlett won the toss and chose to field, setting the tone with an early breakthrough. Rainhill’s bowling unit looked sharp, with Sarah herself leading from the front, finishing with figures of 4 wickets for just 17 runs. She was well supported by Niamh Scarborough, who claimed 2 wickets, and Kerry Lawler, who chipped in with 1.
The fielding was equally impressive. Wicketkeeper Sue Lowrie was outstanding behind the stumps, taking three well-held catches. Skipper Sarah added to her all-round display with a safe pair of hands in the field, taking a key catch, as did Kerry Lawler. Maghull finished on 262 net from their 16 overs.
In reply, Rainhill batted with confidence and control. Lucy Williams top-scored with an unbeaten 34 off 16 balls, while Sarah Curlett added 29* off 15 to her bowling haul. Jayne Curlett (11), Kerry Lawler (12), and Julie Foulkes (5) all contributed valuable runs. Despite losing just two wickets, the Rockettes steadily built their total to an excellent 310 net, securing a well-earned victory.
The match also saw Rockettes debuts for Cheryl Gordon and Lucy – both of whom settled in well and are exciting additions to the squad.
Thanks to Maghull CC for being fantastic opponents, and to Matt Lawler for umpiring, Ben at square leg and Lucy Strettle for scoring.
