Scorecard

On a hot and humid Sunday afternoon In Liverpool, Rainhill Academy XI extended their unbeaten run to a magnificent seven wins from seven with a determined 14-run victory away to Sefton Park. The academy side, resilient as ever, dug deep in testing conditions to secure another crucial 20-point haul and further cement their place at the summit of the table.

Having won the toss, Rainhill opted to bat first. Though the top order found fluency hard to come by early on, the innings was anchored superbly by Finnlee Millar, whose composed 45 off 65 balls laid a strong foundation. He was well supported by Matt Lawler, who dug in with 37 from 86, steering the middle overs through a choppy spell of wickets. Rainhill looked to be building something substantial at 77 for 2, but a flurry of quick dismissals saw them wobble to 99 for 6. Yet, with quiet resolve, the lower order eked out vital runs to push the total to 137 — a score that, while modest, proved enough thanks to the fire and focus that followed with the ball.

Sefton Park’s reply started cautiously, with early pressure applied by Finn Millar (sponsored by www.red-tree.co.uk) and Jack Tyms. But it was Finlay Venables who took centre stage with a sensational spell of bowling, claiming his first senior five-wicket haul in style. His 5 for 26 dismantled the heart of the opposition’s batting — a performance full of control, guile, and growing confidence. The crowning moment came in fitting fashion: his fifth wicket sealed by a stunning diving catch from April Jones, clinging on to the ball brilliantly. It was a catch of pure instinct and athleticism — a standout moment in the field.

April and Owen Morrissey were sharp in the field and the team rallying behind every run and wicket, Rainhill stayed composed as Sefton Park edged towards their target. At one point, just 20 runs were needed from the final five overs with two wickets in hand — but Rainhill’s young side held their nerve. Nathan Lawler (sponsored by www.peelhousedental.co.uk)  returned to close things out clinically, finishing with three wickets and ensuring the job was done.

This wasn’t just a win — it was a triumph of teamwork, spirit, and clutch performances in key moments. In the heat, and under pressure, Rainhill’s academy players once again showed their maturity beyond their years. As they continue to fly high at the top of the table, belief and momentum are growing stronger by the week.
