Newsham Park CC 90/9 (net score 245)
Rainhill CC 87/2 (net score 277)
On a sunny evening, Rainhill CC’s Women’s Softball side made the short trip for their Plate Round 2 clash against Newsham Park, with the contest played out on a tired old astro wicket, complete with curious mounds at either end that looked more suited to hosting termites than stumps. The long grass meant the ball refused to run for the rope, and add in a crosswind that kept things lively with every delivery – tricky conditions, but equally so for both sides.
Having won the toss and choosing to field, Rainhill wasted no time in asserting themselves. Kerry Lawler was at the heart of the action, claiming four wickets in a spell that included a smart return catch and two run outs. Sarah Curlett bowled with her trademark control and discipline across her four overs, conceding just 10 runs and taking a wicket. Jayne Curlett also claimed a scalp as Rainhill hustled through the innings with purpose, taking 9 wickets overall and holding Newsham Park to a net score of 245.
With bat in hand, Rainhill paced their response with poise and spirit. Making her debut for Rainhill, Lisa Clarke looked right at home – her running between the wickets was decisive and sharp. Lucy Williams, as always, showed composure, capping it all with a magnificent six off her final ball. Her work in the field had already been superb, sharp throws, and cutting off what looked like guaranteed boundaries.
Cheryl Gordon and Jayne Curlett followed, grafting through a tricky phase where the ball was doing all sorts in the breeze and navigating their stint calmly. Then came Sue Lowrie and Julie Foulkes, combining caution, smart shot selection and careful running, to keep things steady.
Bringing up the rear were captain Sarah Curlett and Kerry Lawler. Sarah played a captain’s knock, unbeaten on 13, while Kerry’s innings took an unfortunate twist – a delivery nipped in sharply (she says it was the wind!) and somehow found its way through her legs, and dislodging the bails. Her look of pure disbelief was met with laughter from Sarah at the non-striker’s end.
Rainhill lost just two wickets across their 16 overs, finishing on a net score of 277 – a well-earned win built on collective effort and sheer enjoyment of the game.
As ever, the result was a credit to the whole squad – each player contributing with bat, ball, or in the field. The smiles at the end said it all.
