Liverpool CC 103/3 (net score 288)
Rainhill CC 124/7 (net score 289)
On a warm Tuesday evening at Rainhill, the Women’s Softball side played in a thrilling encounter against Liverpool CC in the latest round of the Liverpool Competition Women & Girls Super 8s Division 1.
Winning the toss, Rainhill elected to field first, Kerry Lawler and Sarah Curlett led a disciplined attack, both returning miserly figures — Kerry conceding just 15 runs in her four overs, Sarah matching her control with 16 from her four over spell. Their consistency was well supported by the rest of the bowling unit, with Julie Foulkes claiming a key wicket thanks to a sharp catch from Cassie Hopkins, and further pressure applied by Jayne Curlett, Cassie, and debutant Lisa Griffiths, who confidently stepped up to deliver an over on her first outing for the side.
The fielders were equally sharp, with Sue Lowrie and Sarah claiming two crucial run outs that kept Liverpool from gaining full momentum. The team’s collective effort restricted Liverpool to a net score of 288.
Chasing, Rainhill’s innings saw moments of class, resilience, and plenty of nerve-jangling drama. Lucy Williams continued shining with the bat, including dispatching a towering six as part of her excellent 28-run contribution. Cassie Hopkins delivered a fine all-round performance, adding an unbeaten 18 with the bat to her earlier work with ball and in the field. Jayne Curlett played a steady hand in the middle overs, and while Liverpool’s bowlers managed to pick up seven wickets — an unusually high number for Rainhill — the home side dug deep.
The match built to a nail-biting crescendo in the final over. Needing just three runs to win, Rainhill suddenly found themselves wobbling after a wicket loss knocked five runs off their score, leaving eight required from four deliveries.
A sharp single off a no-ball, followed by another well-judged run, brought the target down to four from two. With tension mounting, Sarah Curlett struck the penultimate ball firmly for four, taking Rainhill to the brink. Needing only to avoid losing another wicket on the final ball, Sarah calmly blocked out the last delivery, sealing a nerve-shredding one-run victory and sending Rainhill to the top of the league with three wins from three.
There were certainly a few ‘village cricket’ moments along the way — Kerry’s unfortunate brush with her own stumps, Sue Lowrie’s untimely stroll out of her crease — but through it all, the team’s determination shone. With contributions throughout, Rainhill once again proved their ability, and dug deep when it mattered most.
