Sunday 4th May saw Rainhill’s young academy side—made up of ten U18s and one adult—secure their second win of the 2025 season, overcoming Whitefield (Roby) 3rd XI by 3 wickets at Victoria Terrace.

After being asked to field, Rainhill made a strong start with the ball. Finnlee Millar struck twice in his opening spell, removing both openers and setting the tone.  He returned later in the innings to take the final wicket, caught by Nathan Lawler, finishing with 3 for 27 in a controlled and effective display.

Captain Nathan Lawler led from the front, delivering a superb spell of 10 overs, 4 for 17, including four maidens.  His accuracy through the middle overs ensured Whitefield struggled to build any lasting momentum. Finlay Venables offered excellent support, bowling with real maturity to return figures of 1 for 13 from 6 overs, with two maidens.

Tejas Sirikonda (2 for 29) applied further pressure, keeping the run rate down while picking up two key wickets.

Behind the stumps, Freddie Foulkes had a standout game, taking three catches, all at important moments, including removing their set batter who was on 57. His awareness and safe hands helped Rainhill capitalise on the pressure built by the bowlers.

Despite a few missed chances in the field, the overall bowling and fielding performance was tight and disciplined, and Whitefield were bowled out for 142 in the 34th over.

In reply, Rainhill’s chase was built on a solid foundation. Nathan Lawler capped off a fine all-round performance with a composed 36, guiding the innings through the early stages alongside Freddie Foulkes (13) in a 41-run opening stand.

Following their dismissals, Matt Lawler (32) and Sid Ram (17) steadied things with a crucial 50-run partnership. As wickets fell late in the innings, Owen Morrissey added a vital 15, playing sensibly to help guide the side closer to the target—his contribution proving essential, even if he wasn’t there at the end.

Rainhill completed the chase in the 33rd over, securing a second consecutive victory built on mature batting, tight bowling, and quality fielding..

With two wins from two, Rainhill’s young 4th XI are showing real promise as they continue their development in open-age cricket.

Thanks as always to Whitefield, who were friendly, competitive and played the game in the right spirit—great to see both sides enjoying the contest
