Spring View 25-5 (16) (Moran 11; Morrissey 3-3)
Rainhill 31-2 (4.4) (Lawler 28*; Broad 1-1)
Rainhill Under-15s clinched the league title with an emphatic win over Spring View in the Wigan and District Junior Cricket League. The match, played at Dower House Farm, saw Rainhill dominate both with the ball and the bat, as they secured victory with ease.
After winning the toss, Rainhill elected to field first, a decision that paid off handsomely. Rainhill’s bowlers were relentless, making quick work of Spring View’s inexperienced batting lineup. Finnlee Millar started the proceedings by dismissing Joshua Heaton for a duck in the first over. Owen Morrissey then delivered a standout performance with the ball, taking three crucial wickets, including that of Spring View captain Robbie McLaughlin for just one run. Morrissey’s precise line and length left Spring View struggling at 11 for 3, with Morrissey finishing with figures of 3-1-3-3.
Spring View’s Tom Moran tried to anchor the innings, scoring 11 runs off 41 balls, but the rest of the batting order failed to build any momentum. Rainhill’s fielding was sharp, and a run-out further compounded Spring View’s troubles, as they managed only 29 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 15 overs.
Chasing a modest target, Rainhill’s opening batsman and captain, Nathan Lawler, led from the front with a commanding knock. Lawler scored an unbeaten 28 runs, hitting six boundaries to ensure a swift chase. Despite losing two wickets, Rainhill never looked in trouble. Freddie Foulkes was caught off Tom Moran for one run, and Ayaan Maheshwari was stumped off Charlie Broad for one, but these dismissals were merely hiccups in an otherwise smooth innings.
Rainhill reached the target in just 4.4 overs, finishing on 31 for 2. This victory not only highlighted Rainhill’s dominance in the league but also showcased their depth and maturity as a team. Their ability to handle the pressure of a league-deciding match with such composure speaks volumes about the team’s potential and future prospects.
The win secured the league title for Rainhill Under-15s, capping off an impressive season where their all-round capabilities were on full display. The team celebrated their success, proud of their achievements and excited for what lies ahead.
