Rainhill Women Shine in Softball Festival Triumph at Widnes Cricket Club

On a sunny day at Widnes Cricket Club, Rainhill’s women’s team showcased their prowess in a thrilling softball festival organised by the Cheshire Women and Girls Cricket Board.  It was a vibrant atmosphere complemented by music and goody bags.

Rainhill’s lineup includes Sarah Curlett, Jayne Curlett, Kerry Lawler, Julie Foulkes, Emily Lowrie, Katie Roberts, Lucy Strettle, and Niamh Scarborough.

In their first encounter against Widnes, Rainhill set the tone with a solid batting performance, featuring well-run singles and timely boundaries. Despite a tight finish, Rainhill emerged victorious by 5 runs, thanks to Niamh’s heroics with the ball in the final over, culminating in a stunning one-handed catch.

The second match against Caldy proved equally gripping, with Rainhill displaying both batting and bowling excellence. Lucy and Katie’s composed batting in the final two overs guided Rainhill to a 6-run victory in another thrilling finish.

Facing Runcorn in their final group stage match, Rainhill’s stellar fielding and bowling restricted their opponents to a score of just 21. A dominant batting display, highlighted by Sarah’s aggressive strokeplay (6 hitting!) secured a resounding 40-run win for Rainhill.

With an impeccable record of three wins out of three, Rainhill stormed into the final against Caldy’s second team. Despite a nervy start in batting, Rainhill rallied to post their highest total of the day, reaching 88 runs.  Tight bowling and sharp fielding sealed the deal, as Lucy’s crucial two wickets in the final over ensured Rainhill’s victory and crowned them champions of the festival.

Overall, Rainhill’s performance, encompassing batting prowess, disciplined bowling, and tight fielding, reflected their commitment and  unity.  As the sun set on an exhilarating day, the team savoured their triumph and eagerly await their next match.
